“I welcome news that three local beaches have been awarded status in the recent Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. In particular, it is gratifying to see Crawfordsburn beach awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, as one of the “perfect ten” beaches from Northern Ireland, which is the highest category in the awards. I am also delighted to see Groomsport and Millisle receive Seaside Rural Awards, along with Crawfordsburn which also received a Resort Seaside Award. This is a vote of confidence in the bathing water standards of our local beaches, and is something with international standing and will help attract tourists.
I know that under the new Minister, Michelle McIlveen there will be a continual focus on ensuring that our beaches, which play such a critical role in our local environment, maintain high standards and improve, but there is a challenge to all of locally, especially the Council to bring our remaining beaches up to standard. I want to see in few years time a chain of blue flags along our North Down coastline”
