Mill Street car park all lit up

7th february 2018

Strangford DUP MLA Peter Weir has spoken of the frustration that confusion over ownership and responsibility has resulted in a delay to repair the broken Mill Street car park lights in Newtownards. A fault with the lights has meant that they have been left on day and night since November, costing taxpayers money in unnecessary electricity bills.

 Peter Weir MLA:

“Street lights in Mill Street car park in Newtownards have been on 24/7 since November 2017.  A resident brought this issue to my attention in November last year when they noticed the lights were on all day and night.  I have raised the matter a number of times with Ards and North Down Borough Council.

The fault is such that the lights are either on all the time or off all the time and it was decided that they should remain on, so people could see in the dark nights, until they were fixed.  There have been some complications in trying to get the lights fixed, however, I have now been informed that ‘the electrical supplies within this car park have not been satisfactorily tested by DFI Roads meaning they have not been handed over to Council, and are therefore still the responsibility of DFIRoads.’

The Council are now chasing after DFI Roads to ensure the repairs are carried out.  This situation is ridiculous.  Off street Car Parks were transferred to local Councils in April 2015, almost 3 years later and DFI Roads still have not carried out the necessary satisfactory testing on the electric supplies within the car park to enable it to be taken over by the council.  I have written to DFI roads to call on them to take the necessary action to enable the handover of the electric supplies to council so this issue can be resolved.  In the meantime the lights are still burning all day and night.”
